How to Measure a TV Screen Size

You need to know how to measure a TV screen size before purchasing one to ensure you have the perfect size for the space the television is to be placed. Often, people think bigger is better, and although this is sometimes true, it is true to a point. A huge television in a small room will not only seem awkward, but will make your television viewing a little uncomfortable. On the other hand, a television that is too small will have you not being able to enjoy the detail that new television brings.

Making the right decision on the screen that is right for the space the television will be placed is the first decision in buying a television. Now, you may think simply replacing your old television with a new one is all that is required, but you will be wrong as television screen sizes have changed over the years.

You may have noticed that new televisions these days seem to be getting smaller. Well, you will be right in making this assumption. Televisions, including the size of the screens have gotten smaller over the years. For instance, a 42 inch television of 20 years ago is not the same as a 42 inch one these days - the old ones are slightly bigger in size, and more specifically, the size of the screen.

Televisions are measured diagonally from the bottom left to the top right. Now, this measurement is of the screen, and not the entire height of the television. To measure a TV screen, you can either use a ruler or a tape measure. TV screen sizes are measured in inches so you will want to stick to this metrics when measuring yours. Now this measurement of the screen is relevant, but what is more relevant is the actual size of the television - the height, width and breadth of it. You will need to do this to ensure the television will fit in the space in which it is to be placed.

Now, although it is best to use a tape measure to measure the television, you may not be able to do so if you are seeking to purchase one online, or are not comfortable taking a tape measure to the store. You can simply take a mental picture of the television, having a rough estimate of the size of it.

Now, after measuring the television, you will more importantly need to measure the entertainment centre that the television will be placed in. Doing so will ensure you have enough space for the television before making your purchase. Remember, your television should be smaller than the entertainment centre in which it will be placed.
